What is a certified translation and why does USCIS require it?
USCIS requires that all documents submitted in a language other than English be accompanied by a complete English translation. That translation must be certified — meaning it must include a signed statement from the translator confirming that the translation is accurate and complete, and that the translator is competent to translate from the source language into English.
A certified translation is not the same as a notarized translation. USCIS does not require notarization — it only requires certification by a qualified translator. Many people confuse the two terms, but for USCIS purposes, a certified translation from a qualified translator like Trebinaldi is all you need.
Our translations include the required certification statement and are accepted by USCIS, immigration courts, U.S. consulates, and other official agencies.

Certified translation vs. notarized translation — what’s the difference?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Here’s the short answer:
USCIS requires certified translations, not notarized translations.
A certified translation includes a signed statement from the translator confirming the accuracy of the translation and their competence to perform it. This is what USCIS requires under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3).
A notarized translation is a translation where a notary public has witnessed the translator’s signature — but the notary does not verify the quality or accuracy of the translation. USCIS does not require notarization.
At Trebinaldi, all our translations include the certification required by USCIS. If your lawyer or a specific agency has asked for a notarized translation for a different purpose (not USCIS), let us know and we can discuss your options.
